Volunteers are needed to help reduce loneliness among older people in Formby, from helping out at events to carrying out admin tasks
Formby Hub was set up to help older people in Formby to access more social activities and reduce loneliness. They do this through a combination of hosting social events and raising awareness of other services which are available in the local community.
There are three volunteer roles which they are currently promoting:
Formby Hub Support Volunteer – This role involves helping with the Hub events which take place approximately 4 or 5 times a year. Examples of previous events include Strawberry Teas, Hot Pot Suppers and Christmas celebrations.
Volunteers are needed to help with the following: taking bookings for events and transport, helping to arrange transport for attendees and liaising with the event organiser regarding any queries.
The majority of this work would take place over the phone, but volunteers would also be welcome to help at the events themselves, which take place at various venues around Formby.
Hub Document Admin Support Volunteer – The Hub Document is a directory of local groups and services which are available to older people. This is then used to help make people aware of what activities are available and signpost them to appropriate services. Volunteers are needed to help keep the Document up to date, checking with groups that their details are still accurate and making any necessary changes.
The Hub Document is kept at several venues across Formby, including Formby Library, Formby Pool, Formby Luncheon Club and Freshfield Children’s Centre. Admin Volunteers would also make these partners aware when new versions of the Hub Document are available, and generally help to promote the existence of the Document in Formby.
Friday Hub Exercise Group Volunteer – the Friday Hub takes place every week at Formby Methodist and features chair based exercises, led by a qualified instructor, followed by tea and a chat.
Volunteers are needed to meet and greet people as they arrive for the group, maintain an attendance register and collect money from those attending. The volunteers will also arrange refreshments and serve tea and coffee.
This role would be available for either one volunteer who is able to commit to attending every Friday, or to a number of volunteers who would be happy to be part of a rota covering the sessions.
Volunteers for all roles will need to have good communication skills, be non-judgemental, be able to maintain confidentiality, be able to work as part of a team but also use your own initiative.
To enquire about the roles, please contact either Catie Page on 01704 832 207 or Heather Davies on 01704 830 038.
