Would you like to volunteer at a community hub in Birkdale?

Work started five years ago on a project to transform the former Station Masters House at Birkdale Railway Station into a multi-function community hub – and the projects is now ‘just a few months away from opening!’

Members of the Birkdale Community Hub and Library group plan to transform the building into a small library and community hub with meeting rooms, plus computer and media facilities. They will use the venue to provide access to computers and the internet within the newly-renovated building as well as running classes in computing and other computer based activities.

Terry Durrance, Chairman of Board of Trustees said: “The renovation of the Station Masters House is now nearing completion and, subject to coronavirus restrictions, should be open to the public in late September. We have raised enough money to get started and we’re raring to go!

“I think that everyone would agree that the unprecedented lockdown measures that we are currently experiencing have, for most people, proved an intolerable obstruction to our enjoyment of life. “News reports are a continual bombardment of doom and gloom and there is a huge thirst for some good news. Well, we have some!

“Ever since the old Birkdale library in Liverpool Road was closed down and demolished, local volunteers have been fighting to find alternative premises for this service to continue. As The Champion have previously reported, Mersey Rail and Network Rail kindly offered us the use of the old Station Masters House at Birkdale Railway Station, which was a building that had not been used for many years.

“There then followed a period of around 5 years, during which time legal formalities were taken care of, funds were raised, plans were drawn up and eventually the builders and other trades people became involved in order that the building should be made fit for purpose.

“Well, we are now just a few months away from opening and we are looking to the Champion to help us achieve our goal.

“The Trustees decided early in the planning stage that rather than solely providing a library, that we would develop the building into a Community Hub, incorporating a full library service, but also encompassing a centre for a vast range of community activities serving the whole of Birkdale and further afield. When we open, the hub will offer a comfortable place for internet access, book-borrowing, play for small children, meeting opportunities and much more. There will be full disabled access to the whole building.

“But all these activities need people to run them and we need help – and we are appealing for Champion readers to come forward! Initially, we are looking for volunteers to get the place up and running – such as book management, computer set-up and some small jobs around the building. “Then we need to develop teams who will manage the day to day operations of the Hub, including room hire. We shall be providing training for the various activities.

“Our appeal to your readers is – can you help? If anyone out there can help, please, in the first instance email secretary@thestationmastershouse.co.uk or call 07561 838818.

“Let us know how you would like to help. Getting ready for opening, painting and decorating, book management, computer involvement, providing training, contributing to a newsletter, media promotion, administration, gardening or odd jobs>

“If you have the time and the inclination, then we have a job for you! Please let us know if you have previous experience and interests along with your contact phone number. We will get in touch with you to talk through how you can help and how much time you can spare. Many thanks.”
