Brighter Living Partnership Telephone Befriending: John’s Story

My name is John, 59, and I’m a Telephone Befriender with the Brighter Living Partnership, based in Southport. I currently call about 4 people every week, and their ages range from in their 70’s to 80’s.

A few years ago, I was living in a block of flats in Southport. Although I had neighbours, most of my time was taken up with hospital appointments & GP visits, as I had complex health issues. During the pandemic, I was placed in the high-risk group & was unable to do my shopping. I was put in touch with Brighter Living, as they provided a shopping service for people like myself.

A volunteer called Sara, offered me telephone support at that time, as I was socially isolated and vulnerable. My health condition meant I was unable to work on a physical level and it was after a conversation with Sara, that I wanted to make a difference in the Community and do telephone befriending too.

I call people in their homes once a week and the times are flexible, depending on their needs and availability. Some people I speak with have mobility or health issues and are unable to get out of their homes much.

So when I call them up, you can hear the joy and relief in their voices. Sometimes, mine might be the only voice they hear all week.

Being a Befriender has taken the focus of my own health struggles and issues. There are always people worse off. It gives me great pleasure to know that my phone calls can; reduce isolation, feelings of loneliness and to increase their overall well being.

I hope my story encourages others with time on their hands. A simple phone call can make a difference in someone else’s life.
