Sefton 4 Good, in collaboration with Volunteer Centre Sefton, organised a successful volunteering day with Friends of Rotten Row in Southport on Monday 31st March. The event saw a group of new and existing volunteers come together to help maintain one of the town’s most famous landmarks—a stunning herbaceous border stretching over 746 meters in length.
Rotten Row is an iconic feature of Southport, renowned for its vibrant floral displays and luscious greenery. However, without the dedication and hard work of the Friends of Rotten Row, this beautiful space would not be what it is today. This dedicated group of volunteers work tirelessly to keep the border in top condition, ensuring that residents and visitors can enjoy the beauty of the plants throughout the year.

This particular volunteering session brought in seven new volunteers eager to lend a hand, alongside several regulars from Friends of Rotten Row. Among the new faces were representatives from two organisations currently working on projects in the Southport area. One volunteer joined from Balfour Beatty, while two others came from civil engineering firm D Morgan. The session also welcomed two local residents, David and Sonia, who were keen to give back to their community, as well as two Colombian students, Yaneli and Jhon, who were excited to take part in a meaningful local initiative and practice their English.
The volunteers spent the sunny day weeding and clearing a section of the border near the Morrisons roundabout. Their efforts made a visible difference, helping to preserve the border’s charm and ensuring that it remains a picturesque feature of Southport for all to enjoy.
Events like these highlight the importance of community involvement in maintaining public spaces. Friends of Rotten Row rely on the dedication of local volunteers to help with the upkeep of this cherished area, and they are always looking for more people to get involved.
