Find out how we got at Freshfields Animal Rescue volunteer taster day

Freshfields Animal Rescue in Ince Blundell was buzzing with positive energy during a recent Volunteer Taster Day. The event, organised by Sefton 4 Good in collaboration with Volunteer Centre Sefton and Freshfields Animal Rescue, gave participants a glimpse into the rewarding experience of volunteering at the rescue centre — all while making a real difference.

The group of volunteers included a representative from Balfour Beatty, two volunteers from APS Group, and another great volunteer who specifically came along to assist with essential maintenance work around the site. Each brought a unique set of skills and a shared enthusiasm for giving back to the community.

Throughout the day, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help clear debris from the wildlife area, improving the space for both animals and staff who work tirelessly to care for them. The group also got involved in painting a section of fencing — a much-needed refresh that brightened up the surroundings and contributed to the overall upkeep of the facility.

Of course, no day at Freshfields would be complete without a few animal encounters. Keeping a close eye on the day’s activities — and occasionally offering their own vocal input — were Aretha and Dimitri, a beautiful hen and handsome cockerel couple who call the rescue centre home. Their curious presence and clucking commentary made for a memorable experience, adding a charming touch to the hard work being carried out.

Volunteer Taster Days like this not only provide practical help for the charity but also help forge valuable relationships between local organisations and the community. It’s a chance to step away from the desk or the daily routine and contribute directly to a project with a visible, lasting impact.

“It was a pleasure to have you all here, and you did great work we are very grateful.” said Rosa Harrison, Volunteer Coordinator for Freshfields Animal Rescue. “These sessions help us achieve essential tasks and allow people to see first-hand the work we do and how they can be a part of it.”
