Every Contribution Matters

Volunteer in Sefton

Around the world, millions of people volunteer their time to support others and strengthen communities. 2026 is the United Nations’ International Year of Volunteers, and it’s about celebrating the power of volunteering and inviting more people to get involved locally.

Volunteering: Local Action, Global Impact

You don’t have to be part of an international movement to make a positive difference. The most impact can be made in your local area by volunteering for local groups, charities, sports teams or even just helping your neighbours or doing a litter pick while out for a stroll.

Volunteering locally can help build:

  • Stronger, more inclusive communities
  • Healthier lives and wellbeing
  • Social connection and resilience
  • Progress towards shared global goals

Here in Sefton, that impact starts with simple, everyday acts — people helping people. You don’t need to go far to make a difference. You can start right where you are.

If you want to be inspired by true stories of local people making a difference, check out our community civic awards called Citizens 4 Good. This is where we recognised those who have made a positive contribution to Sefton’s diverse communities.

You can nominate someone who has made a positive impact here.

Every Act Counts

Volunteering doesn’t have to be big or complicated.

It might be:

  • Giving an hour at a community group, Friends of group or youth group
  • Supporting someone who feels isolated
  • Helping at a one-off local event
  • Sharing your skills, experience, or time

Small actions, taken together, create real and lasting change — locally and globally.

Try Volunteering with a Taster Session

In collaboration with Sefton 4 Good, we started hosting volunteer taster sessions with a number of groups around Sefton in 2024 and we have had over 150 volunteers take part in our sessions.

These sessions are:

  • Short and commitment-free
  • Open to everyone  (individuals, groups, young people, corporates)
  • A chance to explore different causes
  • Led by local organisations and volunteers

It’s an easy way to see what volunteering could look like for you.
