What is your name?
What is the name of charity you volunteered with during the COVID-19 response?
Sefton Covid Response
Please tell us a little bit about yourself – experience, current / previous job roles?
I am a semi-retired Nurse, still working one day a week. I worked in the NHS for 37years latterly as a senior Nurse in the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
Why did you want to sign up to volunteer?
I have been an active volunteer since retirement, Volunteering with Liverpool Health Watch, a telephone volunteer with Independent Age and a driver for Re-Engage. I have always felt giving back to the community is important and saw the difference social interaction can make, particularly with elderly people
What activities/ tasks has your volunteering included?
With the onset of the pandemic I increased my telephone volunteering with Independent Age and as we couldn’t drive our elderly ladies in Re-Engage we set up a telephone and delivery service. I also started doing some shopping for elderly neighbours. At this time I decided to volunteer as a shopper with Sefton COVID-19 Response and so do shopping for a self-isolating lady.
My Health Watch Volunteering has ceased during the Pandemic but we keep in touch with each other via Zoom.
What has been a memorable moment from your volunteering so far?
There have been so many but one I recall is a lady I telephone each week telling me how much she looked forward to my calls and how much she looked forward to talking each week.
What words of encouragement would you give for somebody thinking of volunteering?
Give it a go, loneliness is a terrible thing and even a telephone call can make a huge difference. You also get so much back , I have had books recommended, sewing tips and discovered an interest in gardening I never knew I had and have met some wonderful people along the way.
