Nature & Environmental Volunteering in Sefton

If you love being outside in amongst nature then why not donate your time to environmental volunteering?

In Sefton, many organisations are looking for volunteers to support a variety of projects that are designed to help nature and the environment.

The climate crisis can seem like an insurmountable problem, but volunteering with an organisation whose aim is to improve the environment for both people and animals can be a way for you to make a positive contribution. Also, being in nature and being outdoors have been proven to help both mental and physical health.

Here is a selection of our current nature and environmental volunteering opportunities:

Canal and River Trust

This charity looks after more than 2,000 miles of the UK’s canals and waterways, and look after the towpaths, wildlife, locks and many heritage buildings. The Canal and River Trust in Sefton are recruiting for volunteers to help them look after the canals, towpaths and nature along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Crosby Wombles

Crosby Wombles are a litter picking group that organise litter picks throughout the Crosby and Waterloo area. Everyone is welcome to join in and they particularly welcome children, young people and families.

Friends of Crosby Beach

The Friends of Crosby Beach organises litter picks on Crosby beach once a month. Many people join them including young people and families. The group is run by volunteers and in their spare time they do solo litter picks on the beach too.  They also organise bespoke corporate/school beach cleans.

Friends of Waterloo Seafront Gardens

This vibrant friends of group look after the four green spaces that make up Waterloo Seafront Gardens. From litter picks to gardening sessions the Friends of Waterloo Seafront gardens welcomes volunteers of all ages.

Merseyside BioBank

Merseyside BioBank is the Local Environmental Records Centre for North Merseyside. They collect data quality assure information on the natural environment to better inform conservation and decision making for the benefit of biodiversity in North Merseyside. They are looking for volunteers to help with field work as well map digitisation and harvesting data. 

National charities

Conservation Volunteers

A national charity, The Conservation Volunteers bring people together to create, improve and care for green spaces. They are looking for volunteers in Sefton, Merseyside and Lancashire.

Forestry England

Forestry England manages more land and trees than any other organisation in England including Sefton Meadows. They are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks.

Marine Conservation Society

The Marine Conservation Society is an environmental charity that helps to conserve the ocean and marine life. They work across the country and have some remote volunteer roles.

You can also take part in citizen science projects as a volunteer such as the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch and the Big Butterfly Count.
