Volunteer Centre Sefton visited People First, an independent advocacy charity championing fairness and equality.

During our visit we had the privilege of meeting volunteers who shared invaluable insights as experts by experience, offering guidance on how we can enhance the accessibility of volunteering. Many individuals with learning disabilities would love to volunteer, and it’s crucial for organisations to take proactive steps in making their roles more accessible, ensuring a great volunteering experience for all involved.

Volunteers talked about their previous experiences with volunteering, both positive and negative. They expressed feeling like they were not trusted, understood or valued and that people had underestimated their capabilities before. Conversely, when they had a positive experience, they emphasised the positivity of feeling part of the team and being welcomed into the organisation.

We’re passionate about promoting accessible volunteering throughout the Sefton borough. Each volunteer brings valuable contributions, and we strive for a more equitable sector.
