Volunteering in Southport – The Open 2026 and Wayfairers Contemporary Art Fair
Southport is set to take centre stage this summer as Royal Birkdale hosts The 154th Open Championship from 12–19 July 2026—and local people have a unique chance to be part of something special.
As the town prepares to welcome visitors from around the world, a range of volunteering opportunities are opening up, giving residents the chance to showcase Southport at its very best. From supporting one of the world’s biggest sporting events to helping deliver a new cultural attraction, there has never been a better time to get involved.
Be Part of The Open Experience
The return of The Open to Royal Birkdale is a huge moment for Southport, bringing global attention and thousands of visitors to the area.
A key part of making the event a success will be the Open Host Volunteers—friendly faces who will act as ambassadors for the area. Their role will be to ensure visitors feel welcome, informed and supported throughout their time here.
Volunteers will:
- Offer a warm welcome and friendly assistance
- Help visitors navigate the town and key event locations
- Support the smooth flow of crowds at busy points
This is about more than just giving directions—it’s about creating a lasting impression and showing off Southport’s renowned hospitality to a global audience. The opportunity is open to anyone aged 18 and over, with flexible shifts available during the week of The Open.
A Creative Festival Atmosphere in the Town Centre
While golf fans gather at Royal Birkdale, Southport town centre will also be buzzing with creativity. The Wayfarers Contemporary Art Fair will take place from 16–18 July 2026 in the iconic Wayfarers Arcade, bringing together more than 100 artists in a vibrant celebration of contemporary art.
Organisers are now looking for volunteer exhibition stewards to help make the event a success. The role includes:
- Welcoming and engaging with visitors
- Sharing information about the artworks and venue
- Looking after exhibition spaces
- Helping ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all
Volunteers can sign up for flexible four-hour shifts across the three days, making it easy to fit around other commitments. The event also has a strong community focus, with a portion of proceeds supporting Bebe’s Hive.
A Proud Moment for Southport
With world-class sport and an exciting new arts event happening side by side, July promises to be a landmark moment for Southport.
Volunteers will play a vital role in shaping that experience—helping to create a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere and ensuring visitors leave with fond memories of the town. Whether you’re passionate about sport, culture, or simply taking pride in your community, these opportunities offer a fantastic way to get involved.
